Score du Jour

One of the things I love about “poking around” thrift and junk shops is that it’s always a treasure hunt. You might spot the piece that everyone else has overlooked, walked right by, picked up and put back down. If you’ve been reading Pigtown*Design for any length of time, you know that I spot treasures on a somewhat regular basis. There’s a thrift shop that I check out every so often, mainly to search for screw-back earrings for my mother, and when I was there the other day, I spotted a roll of fabric standing in the corner. I am sure that dozens of people had seen it, and maybe a few had even checked out the fabric’s print, but no one had bought it.Until I showed up, checked the selvedge and plunked down some bills. I walked out and down the street back to my car, carrying the bolt of fabric over my shoulder, hoping not to make any sudden moves and hit someone in the head with the end of the bolt.On the way home, I contemplated what I could do with this gorgeous piece of fabric, which actually measures about five yards. Some pillows? Curtains for the spare bedroom? A duvet cover for my bed? I am still thinking about ideas. Regardless of what I do with it, I know I got an amazing deal on some yardage of an extraordinary fabric!  It’s Scalamandré’s La Dame Aux Camelias, in linen/cotton with 20 hand-screened colours. This colourway is Imari on Black, which is the one I would have chosen regardless of where it came from! They don’t call me the Junque Whisperer for nothing!

To make the the day even better, I got to have coffee with this little gal and her mother!
