Waterloo Sunset

One of the missing pieces in the Closing Ceremony was the quintessential London song, Waterloo Sunset, sung by Ray Davies of the Kinks. 1338px-Waterloo_Bridge_PanoramaThe song is more or less about Waterloo Bridge, which is both a pedestrian and road traffic link between London and the South Bank, and due to its location at a bend in the river, has excellent views of some key spots in London, like St. Paul’s Cathedral and the Gherkin, as well as Westminster and the London Eye. Waterloo_Bridge,_London-17Aug2009Waterloo Sunset has been named one of the greatest songs about London, as well as the anthem of London. It was named as one of the best rock n’roll songs by Rolling Stone magazine.

When Ray Davies sang the tagline of the song: Sha-la-la, the entire crowd at the stadium sang it along with him. Here’s the song on YouTube from the ceremony. There’s a little bit of Beatles first, then it swings into Waterloo Sunset. Listen for the crowd singing along.

I finally saw a still image of my friend David at the ceremony, too! david

Thanks so much to everyone for all of the thoughts and prayers for our friend Larry. He’s got a long road ahead of him even to get out of the hospital. Having the support so many great friends and from complete strangers is a great comfort to all who know him.
